Some of the weeks it’s been easier to respond after the class discussion. But I’m going to work on getting more of them done in time. |

| Facilitator | 10 | Will happen March 25 (Politics, Borders…) I think this will be my reading: https://www.nyc.gov/assets/ochia/downloads/pdf/guide-to-health-insurance-for-immigrants.pdf. Initial sketch: I’m hoping to discuss this as an uber political document. Every combination of circumstances that makes an immigrant eligible for public health insurance ends up on the list because of interactions between the federal government, state government, administrators, and whatever mood voters are in relating to immigrants. Your age, the specific year you arrived, the reason, have you experienced domestic violence – there’s something there about how your story becomes part of this administrative dataset that grants you health care. I especially want people to look at page 11: all of those subcategories also have subcategories that they didn’t include. There’s a gigantic category of people who aren’t lawfully present and we refuse to grant them legal status but said they can stay. All of our contradictions and immigration policy failures produce this document and real people have to participate in this mess to get what they need. |
